Here's one I'm asked about all the time. Foundation looks perfect when you put it on, and a few hours later it's darker, warmer, maybe even a little orange. Most women assume they bought the wrong shade. Often, they didn't.
What you're seeing is oxidizing, and it's a different problem from the one in my last post, where the tone is wrong from the start. 👉 Foundation Tone: Too Pink or Too Orange? Here's the easy way to tell them apart. If it looks wrong right away, that's tone. If it looks right and changes later, that's oxidizing.
So what's going on? Foundation is a mix of pigments and oils, and once it's on your face it starts to react. Your natural skin oils mix with the pigments, air plays a part, and some formulas are simply more likely to shift than others. Heat and the products underneath, like moisturizer and sunscreen, can add to it.
Sometimes it isn't oxidizing at all. Full coverage and long wear formulas hold a lot of pigment, and as they dry down they can look richer than they did when you first blended them in.
This isn't only an oily skin problem either. Dry skin can shift too, especially when foundation settles unevenly into dry patches, so it's worth watching for on mature skin.
Here are some easy fixes. Give your moisturizer or primer a few minutes to absorb before foundation goes on. Use thin layers, because a thick layer makes any shift more noticeable. Set the areas that get oily, like your nose and forehead. And don't judge a shade the second you blend it in.
Pro tip: test foundation on your jawline, then wait. Wear a sample for a few hours before you buy and check it again in natural light. If one formula keeps changing on you, it's not you, it's the formula. Try a different formula before you try a different shade.
A quick note about the photos in this post. They're straight from my camera, with no filters and no makeup, just swatches on my own skin. Real skin is what you're matching, so that's what I want you to see.
