After decades in the beauty industry and makeup education, I see the same handful of habits come up again and again. Here are five of the most common ones and what I suggest instead.
Your foundation looked perfect in the store. Now it doesn't.
There are a few reasons this can happen. Most often the foundation has oxidized on the skin after application. The same way a cut apple turns brown, foundation can change colour on your skin after a small amount of time. Swatch a sample on your jawline in store and wait five to ten minutes to see if it has changed colour, or ask for a sample to try at home. What looks right immediately is not always the right one.
Thick eyeliner
As our eyes become more hooded there is less visible space between the lash line and the crease. A thick liner fills that space entirely and makes the eye look heavy. Try a thinner line and push the product right in between your lashes to make the root of the lashes look fuller. You can do this with a very fine, sharpened pencil.
The wrong concealer colour
One concealer does not do all things. Under eye colour correcting and spot concealing require different colours entirely. Most people choose one product hoping it covers everything. Colour theory matters more than most people realize.
Dark lip colours
Dark colours tend to make things look smaller. The same applies to your lips. If you want more fullness reach for something medium to light in tone with a satin or creamy finish. The lighter the shade the more light it reflects, which creates the illusion of volume.
Missing the brow gel step
Most people don't know brow gel exists. Like hair gel, it keeps your brows in place all day. Coloured versions add colour and hold to the brow hairs themselves. Clear versions just keep everything in place. It is a small step that makes a significant difference.
Each of these topics deserves its own post and we will be diving deeper into all of them. Follow along or bookmark this page so you don't miss it.
Sometimes it only takes one small shift in colour, texture or technique to change how you feel about your whole face. That is exactly what we work on together in a private lesson. 👉 Booking link
