Most people have heard of setting spray but aren't sure what it actually does or why their makeup still doesn't last.
Here is the simple version.
Setting spray is primarily a hydrating spray. Used before makeup it acts like an added moisturizer, prepping and hydrating the skin before you apply anything. Used after makeup it adds moisture back into products like powder and gives your finished look a more skin-like, glowy finish rather than a dry one.
Here is where it gets confusing. Most brands use the term "setting spray" to mean a spray that holds your makeup in place. But many of them are actually hydrating sprays that soften and blend rather than truly seal. The label doesn't always tell you what's actually inside.
Fixing spray is the one that genuinely locks everything in place. Think of it as hairspray for your face. I reach for this on clients who need long wear, big events, hot and humid days, or anything that has to last from early morning well into the night. It is not something most people need for everyday use.
Some sprays do both. The Danessa Myricks spray I use is mattifying and sealing in one step — no glow, no hydration, just hold. Perfect for oily skin or long days. MAC Fix+ is a hydrating spray I reach for when skin needs more moisture. And the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray is my go to after powder, when I want to bring hydration and glow back into the skin.
